How to create custom product badges in Shopify
Beyond Sale, New, and Bestseller. How to design your own badges with custom copy, colors, and icons.
When custom badges make sense
Your brand has specific callouts that do not map to standard labels. Examples: “Handmade”, “Vegan”, “Last Chance”, “Staff Pick”.
Step 1. Plan your copy
Custom badges work best with short copy, 1 to 3 words. “Handmade” yes, “Hand-crafted in Vermont” no.
Step 2. Pick colors
Your brand primary color for aspirational badges (Staff Pick), red for urgency (Last Chance), green for certifications (Vegan).
Step 3. Create in Product Badges
Add badge, enter copy, pick color, pick shape (pill works for most), save.
Step 4. Target
Tag-based targeting is simplest. Tag products with “vegan”, “handmade”, “staff-pick” as needed, then target those tags.
Step 5. Design tips
Keep badges contrasted with your product image background. Test on mobile where badge area is smaller.
