How to notify customers about store credit on Shopify (email, Klaviyo, on-site)

Store credit only drives repeat orders if customers know it exists. The three ways to tell them, and the Klaviyo gap to plan around.

The problem

Credit nobody knows about is a liability on your books that never converts. Merchants issue store credit and assume the customer saw it. They did not. You need a notification layer.

Option 1. Shopify’s native notification

When store credit is issued through Shopify’s native system, Shopify can send the customer a notification email. It is functional but generic, and you have limited control over timing and content.

Option 2. Klaviyo (know the gap)

Here is the catch most merchants hit: Klaviyo does not natively handle Shopify store credit balances. There is no built-in store credit property to drop into a flow, so you cannot just add a “you have $20 credit” block to your existing emails. Workarounds exist (custom properties fed by an integration or CSV export) but plan for the manual step. If your credit program depends on email, test this before you promise it to anyone.

Option 3. Show the balance on the storefront

The highest-conversion notification is the one on your store itself. Bulk Store Credit includes a display widget, a header bar or floating badge that shows a logged-in customer their live balance while they browse. The credit follows them to checkout, where Shopify applies it automatically. No email deliverability, no flow-building, always current.

The playbook that works

  1. Issue the credit (one-off or bulk via CSV)
  2. Turn on the storefront balance widget so the credit is visible on every visit
  3. Send a plain announcement email from your regular email tool: “we added store credit to your account, log in to see it.” No balance merge fields needed, the widget handles the reveal
  4. Watch redemption rates in the first 14 days. Unspent credit after that is your cue for a reminder
