How to reward VIP customers with store credit on Shopify
A simple system for tagging your top customers and issuing them recurring store credit. No loyalty platform required, works on any Shopify plan.
Why store credit beats a points program for VIPs
Most VIP loyalty programs are built around points. Customers earn 10 points per dollar, accumulate them, and redeem them for tiered rewards. The problem with points is friction. Points are a second currency that customers have to convert mentally. The conversion rate is opaque, the dashboard is rarely opened, and most points expire unused.
Store credit is points without the conversion. It is denominated in your currency. The customer sees “$25 of credit” and knows exactly what it is worth. There is no math, no opaque tier system, and no secondary balance to manage.
For most Shopify stores under 5,000 monthly orders, a simple VIP store credit program will outperform a points loyalty platform on actual customer engagement and on operational cost.
Step 1. Define the VIP segment
Open Shopify admin, go to Customers, and build a segment. The right filter depends on your business but most stores land on one of these:
Lifetime spend over $X. A clean threshold like “lifetime spend over $500” is easy to communicate to customers if you ever choose to make the program public.
Order count over N. “Customers with 5 or more orders” rewards repeat purchase frequency rather than total spend.
Spend in the last 12 months over $X. This rewards recent loyalty rather than legacy customers who bought once and never came back.
Pick one. Save the segment as “VIP tier” or whatever you want to call it internally.
Step 2. Tag the segment
Add a customer tag to everyone in the segment so the data flows back into your other tools. The tag could be vip-tier-1 or just vip. You can do this in bulk from the segment view by selecting all and using the “Add tag” bulk action.
Tags are useful if you also want to give VIPs early access, free shipping, or a different email cadence. The tag is the source of truth.
Step 3. Decide the credit cadence
Three patterns work, pick one that fits your store:
Quarterly thank-you credit. Every quarter, issue a flat credit to all VIPs as a thank-you. Easy to operate, predictable for the customer.
Birthday or anniversary credit. Use Shopify’s customer birthday metafield (or an email tool that captures it) to issue credit on the customer’s birthday. Higher emotional impact, more operational overhead.
Spend-triggered credit. Every time a VIP places an order, issue 5% of the order value as store credit on their account. This is closest to a points program but without the points abstraction.
Most stores start with quarterly because it is simplest to set up and reason about.
Step 4. Bulk issue credit
Once you have the VIP segment and the cadence, issuing credit is the easy part.
Export the VIP segment as CSV from Shopify admin. The export includes customer emails. Open Win-Win Store Credit, go to the bulk upload tool, drop in the CSV, set a flat amount per customer (for example, $25 every quarter), add a note like “Q2 VIP thank-you,” and confirm.
If you want different amounts per VIP based on lifetime spend, edit the CSV before uploading and set per-row amounts. The app supports both.
Step 5. Send the VIP email
The notification email matters more for VIPs than for any other group. The default app email works, but a personal email from a real human goes much further.
A short message like this works:
Hi [first name],
Just wanted to say thanks for being one of our top customers this year. Added $25 of store credit to your account. No code needed, it applies automatically next time you check out.
Cheers, [your name]
Send it from your support inbox or your founder address. Plain text. No banners. The credit notification from the app already covers the technical detail. Your job is the relationship.
Step 6. Show VIP status on the storefront
This is optional but powerful. If you tag VIPs with a customer tag, you can use that tag to show a small widget on the customer’s account page or on product pages. Something simple like “VIP customer, $25 credit available.”
You can also use the tag to give VIPs early access to drops, faster shipping, or member-only collections. The tag is the connector between the credit program and everything else you do for that customer.
Pricing math
Take a customer with $1,000 of lifetime spend. If you give them $25 of credit each quarter, that is $100 a year, or 10% of their lifetime spend. That feels expensive in isolation.
The math changes if you measure incremental orders. If a quarterly $25 credit drives one extra order per VIP per year at $80 AOV, you spent $100 to earn $80 plus the credit redemption. That is roughly break-even on the credit alone, but the LTV uplift over the next 2 years usually clears 3x to 5x. Track it in your dashboard before assuming any number.
What to avoid
Do not announce the program publicly until you have run it for a quarter. You want to test the email tone, the credit amount, and the cadence before baking expectations into a public landing page.
Do not exclude any product from the credit. VIPs can spot exclusions from a mile away and it sours the program.
Do not let the credit balance accumulate forever. Set a 12 month expiry on each credit so balances clear if a VIP goes inactive. That prevents your liability from ballooning over time.
