One balance is the whole point

Before native POS store credit, a multi-store retailer running credit had two systems: the website’s balance and whatever the registers used, usually paper or a gift card issued as a workaround. Reconciling them was somebody’s job. Since Shopify POS started accepting native store credit in 2025, there is one balance on the customer record and it is spent wherever the customer happens to be.

That only works if the prerequisites in step one are all true on every device. The most common support ticket we see is “store credit works at three of our stores and not the fourth”, and it is always a POS app version.

The identity gap

The thing to understand about POS store credit is that it trusts the staff member completely. Attach a customer, and their balance is available. There is no PIN, no email verification, no prompt. For a $20 goodwill credit that is fine. For an employer-funded program where 350 people each hold $100 that a client company is paying for, it is a control gap, and it needs to be closed by process on day one and by software soon after.

The process version is a two-line script: confirm the name, confirm one detail on file. The software version is a POS UI extension that prompts for that detail before the balance can be applied, and logs who applied it. We build the second version as part of programs that work at POS and online.

What the register cannot see

POS shows a number: available store credit. It does not show that $60 of it came from the safety program and $40 from a return, that the safety program only covers footwear and PPE, or that the customer’s quarterly allowance renews next week. For a straightforward loyalty or refund credit that does not matter. For a program it matters a lot, because the staff member is the one who has to explain it.

The fix is a program tile in POS: balance by program, what each covers, remaining allowance, and, where your policy allows, issuing credit on the spot with a reason code. Product rules are enforced separately by a cart validation Function that runs at POS as well as online, so a cart that breaks the program is stopped with a message rather than discovered in the month-end report.

If you are not on Plus

App-managed store credit, which is what Bulk Store Credit provides on non-Plus plans, redeems at online checkout only. Shopify POS accepts native store credit and nothing else as a store credit payment method. Retailers who need register redemption across several stores need Plus and native credit, which is also the point at which a custom program build starts to make sense for merchants doing more than $2M a year.

Frequently asked questions

Does Shopify POS accept store credit?

Yes, since 2025. Native store credit can be applied as a payment method at Shopify POS on app version 10.2 or later, for stores on Shopify Plus using new customer accounts.

Is it the same balance online and in store?

Yes. Native store credit lives on the customer record, so there is one balance. A redemption at the register reduces what the customer can spend online and the other way round.

Does POS check that the customer is who they say they are?

No. It applies the balance of whichever customer the staff member attaches to the sale. Identity confirmation is a staff process, and for higher-value programs it is worth building a prompt into a POS extension.

Can store credit be limited to certain products at POS?

Not natively. A cart validation Function on Shopify Plus can block a cart that includes products outside the program and show a message at the register and online. That is custom work.

Can staff issue store credit from POS?

Not from the standard POS screens. A POS UI extension can add a tile that issues credit to the attached customer with a reason code, so a return, a goodwill gesture or a program top-up can happen at the register and appear in the same report.

What about app-managed store credit on non-Plus plans?

App-managed credit, such as the free tier of Bulk Store Credit, redeems at online checkout. It is not a POS payment method, because only native store credit is. Multi-location retailers who need register redemption need Plus and native credit.
