Why wholesale customers love store credit

Wholesale and B2B customers are used to thinking in account balances. Net 30 terms, prepayment credits, bulk discounts, and seasonal rebates are all forms of credit that have been baked into B2B commerce for decades. When you offer Shopify store credit to a wholesale account, you are speaking a language they already understand.

Compare that to a discount code. Discount codes feel cheap to a B2B buyer. They are designed for retail consumers, they expire, and they require manual application. A balance on the account is what wholesale buyers actually want.

This guide covers the three most common Shopify store credit setups for wholesale, what each one solves, and how to operate them on every Shopify plan including Shopify B2B.

Setup 1: prepayment credit for net terms accounts

Some wholesale customers prepay their account and draw down against the balance over time. Others get net 30 or net 60 terms. Either way, you need a place to track the running balance.

Shopify store credit works for the prepayment case. The customer wires in $5,000, you issue $5,000 of store credit to their customer record, and the credit applies automatically as they place orders. The balance is visible to both you and them.

For the net terms case, store credit is not the right tool, since it represents value the customer has already paid for. Use Shopify’s native B2B payment terms feature for net terms.

Setup 2: bulk credit for VIP wholesale accounts

Quarterly thank-you credits for your top wholesale accounts. The same pattern as retail VIP programs but with bigger numbers.

Bulk store credit issued across wholesale customer tiers

Build a customer segment for your wholesale tier in Shopify admin (typically tagged with wholesale or filtered by company name if you are on Shopify B2B). Export as CSV. Issue credit to all of them at once via Bulk Store Credit by Win-Win Apps with a flat amount or tiered by lifetime spend.

Most wholesale programs we see issue $250 to $1,000 per quarter to top accounts and $50 to $200 to mid-tier accounts. The credit applies on the next order automatically.

Step-by-step on the bulk credit flow is in win back lapsed Shopify customers with store credit. The mechanics are identical for wholesale, just at higher dollar amounts.

Setup 3: rebate credit for volume tiers

Volume rebates are a classic B2B lever. Spend $50,000 in a quarter, get 5% back. Spend $100,000, get 7%.

You can run this on Shopify by tracking quarterly spend per customer (Shopify reports give you this), then issuing the rebate as store credit at the end of the quarter. Customers see the credit on their account and apply it to the next quarter’s orders.

This works because the credit cannot leak (locked to the customer record), it is denominated in your currency (no points conversion math), and it applies automatically. B2B accounts payable teams love it because there is no invoice to reconcile, the balance is just there at checkout.

How wholesale customers see and apply credit

The customer-facing experience is the same as retail. The buyer logs into their account, places an order through Shopify checkout (or through the B2B portal if you are on Shopify B2B), and sees the credit applied automatically as a discount line on the order summary.

For B2B accounts where multiple buyers share a single customer record, the credit applies regardless of which buyer is checking out, as long as they are signed in.

For accounts using Shopify B2B’s payment terms feature, the store credit reduces the invoice total before the net 30 calculation, so the customer’s invoice reflects the post-credit amount.

What to track on your side

Three reports keep your wholesale credit program clean:

Credit issued by tier. How much new credit went to each tier (top, mid, etc) this period. This is your discretionary spend on the program.

Redemption rate by tier. What percentage of credit issued has been redeemed within 60, 90, and 180 days. This is your program’s health metric. If top-tier customers are not redeeming, the program is not working.

Outstanding balance by customer. Total credit on each wholesale account that has not yet been redeemed and has not yet expired. This is your liability snapshot, and it is also the data you hand to your finance team.

The full export pattern for these reports is in Shopify store credit accounting.

Operating tips

Set expiry on every credit. 12 months for retail, 6 months for wholesale. Wholesale balances should turn over faster because order cycles are shorter and the balances are larger.

Communicate the program in writing. B2B customers want a one-page document explaining how the program works, the tier thresholds, and the credit issuance schedule. This is part of your wholesale onboarding kit.

Pair the credit with a personal email. A quarterly note from your wholesale rep to the buyer saying “we issued $500 of credit to your account this quarter, available for your next order” goes much further than the auto-generated email from the app.

Do not exclude products from credit redemption. Wholesale buyers will spot exclusions immediately and it sours the relationship. Apply credit to everything.

Pricing math

For a wholesale program with 50 active accounts and an average $500 quarterly credit:

  • Total credit issued per quarter: $25,000
  • Typical redemption rate within 90 days: 70 to 85%
  • Net cost (assuming 75% redemption): $18,750 per quarter, or $75,000 per year

In return, you typically see a 10 to 25% lift in repeat order frequency from your wholesale accounts. On a $1M wholesale book, that is $100k to $250k in incremental revenue. The math works out cleanly for most B2B SKUs.

Tools

Bulk Store Credit by Win-Win Apps works on every Shopify plan including Shopify B2B. Free tier covers the customer-facing widget and 10-row CSV. Pro at $49 per month gives you unlimited bulk uploads, which is what you need for a wholesale program at any scale.

If you also need a full loyalty platform with points, referrals, and gift cards bundled, Rise.ai is the comparison to read. They serve a different segment.
